Yesterday’s election marked a critical day for U.S. minerals mining and for the nation’s economy which depends on a strong mineral supply chain for growth. Continued success will depend on reform of public policies to allow U.S. mining to perform to its full potential.
Fortunately, several legislators in mining states, including Congressman Mark Amodei (R-NV), Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY) will be returning to their offices in Washington D.C. and working to support the mining industry in their respective states. Most notably, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), a prominent supporter of U.S. mining and permitting legislation reform, is set to become the chair of Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. In her efforts to expand domestic mining, Murkowski has introduced critical minerals legislation in 2011 and in 2013 and has spoken out against current domestic policies regarding U.S. mining production. Murkowski has stated,
“Our mineral-related policies remain outdated. Our dependence on foreign minerals is reportedly deepening. Our agencies are not as coordinated and focused on this issue as they need to be. And when it comes to permitting delays for mines, our nation is tied for last – meaning worst – in the world.”
As legislators assume current and new positions, a bipartisan movement toward mining policy reform could soon become reality. As we continue to raise the profile of important minerals mining issues, everyday Americans, opinion leaders and policymakers are finding common ground as they recognize the critical need for policy reform. Hal Quinn, president and CEO of National Mining Association, responds to the election’s results:
“As the president said, his ‘policies were on the ballot’ in this midterm election. The American people have registered their disapproval and are now looking for a fresh start with common sense approaches that can move the economy forward to benefit all Americans…NMA looks forward to working with all members in the new 114th U.S. Congress toward balanced policies that will strengthen our economy and provide Americans a more secure economic future.”
