America’s founding strength was built on abundant natural resources, innovation and the determination to harness them responsibly. As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, we have an opportunity to honor that legacy and ensure future generations inherit the same opportunity for prosperity and independence. The decisions Congress makes today on mineral security will determine whether America can continue to build its economy and strength on its own resources or remain import reliant for the minerals essential to American life.
Minerals Are Essential to America’s Future
The minerals within American borders power everything that have historically made our nation strong. Minerals have helped us build the skyscrapers that are hallmarks of our great American cities, establish the transcontinental railways that connected our country and form a manufacturing base that is now a global leader in technology and defense sectors, among many others. From cobalt and nickel to copper, rare earths and lithium, these resources are the backbone of American economic and national security.
Yet today, it takes an average of 29 years to bring a new mine online in America – the longest of almost all nations – forcing our import reliance for these resources and making it increasingly difficult for domestic producers to compete on the international stage. This dependence is a vulnerability that adversaries, like China, understand and are already exploiting as they dominate the processing and supply of countless minerals and rare earths.
From Mineral Dependence to Mineral Dominance
America’s mineral weakness is not inevitable. It is the result of specific policy choices that, for decades, have made it virtually impossible to bring new domestic mines online – even as America possesses extraordinary mineral wealth. We know the resources are here. What’s missing is the political will to access them.
To build a strong America for the next 250 years, Congress must complete the work:
America’s Next Chapter
A future where America is mineral independent is within reach. Congress has the opportunity to write the next chapter of American strength – one built on the same mineral foundation that powered our past. Congress must seize this moment now to secure America’s mineral future and power the next 250 years of American leadership.
