Letter from the President and CEO

October 22, 2024
Dear Friend,

Last month, our team welcomed 45,000+ visitors and mining leaders from more than 145 countries to the world’s largest mining show to showcase new technologies and discuss the most pressing issues and greatest successes in mining today. Our 2,000+ exhibitors filled out more than 14 football fields of space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. We are proud of the impressive turnout for MINExpo® 2024 and thankful to everyone who contributed to making this event a resounding success. MINExpo showed that support for mining is stronger than ever.

In Washington, we’re seeing a growing understanding among our political leaders that investing in American industries is necessary to build an economy that will continue to lead in the decades to come. Alignment on the need to strengthen our domestic manufacturing and energy production capabilities underscores the need for a strong U.S. mining sector. From reducing mineral reliance on China to preparing for the minerals demands of advanced energy technologies to strengthening national security, U.S. minerals mining must be a priority for our leaders.

Congress has also zeroed in on mining policy with its bipartisan support of The Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act of 2024. The bill would allow good-faith actors to clean up pollution from Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) with tailored liability protections, encouraging crucial restoration efforts from mining companies, conservation organizations and local stakeholders. It passed the Senate unanimously but still needs action in the House and a president’s signature to become law. We thank those who’ve brought it this far and urge representatives to bring this over the finish line before the end of this year. Learn more about the Good Samaritan Act.

Thank you,

Rich Nolan
