LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

December 12, 2024
Dear Friend,

In 2024, the mining industry made important progress, but there is still much more work to do. The National Mining Association’s MINExpo INTERNATIONAL® in September welcomed more than 40,000 attendees and thousands of vendors, demonstrating that domestic mining is stronger than ever.

Most recently, Congress’ historic bipartisan passage of Good Samaritan legislation—more than two decades in the making—marks a significant milestone in tackling the long-overdue cleanup of legacy abandoned mine sites and aiding land and water remediation efforts. We must carry this momentum to the year’s end as many other important pieces of legislation — like permitting reform and the Mining Schools Act — continue to await congressional action. With the Good Samaritan Act now moving to the President’s desk, we hope to see some of these other policies follow suit before the 118th Congress adjourns for the final time.

As the year draws to a close and we gather to celebrate the holidays, I am taking a moment to appreciate the importance of minerals in our daily lives – especially during these celebrations. Our Christmas lights, ornaments, reusable trees, and menorahs are crafted with minerals. The new technology we gift each other and the planes and cars we travel in to see family could not exist without the minerals that they’re built from. Securing domestic supply chains means ensuring that we can carry on our great traditions for generations to come.

Come 2025, the NMA will continue working to improve domestic mining policy with our partners to ensure the United States’ economic prosperity and bolster our national defense, and we look forward to working with the incoming Trump administration and Congress to make progress. Until then, enjoy a happy and healthy New Year.

Thank you,

Rich Nolan
NMA President and CEO
