In a recent column, Anchorage Daily News columnist Tim Bradner reported that jobs and tax revenue are among the many benefits mining has brought—and continues to bring—to Alaska. The state’s Red Dog Mine, for example, has been producing since 1989 and is the world’s largest zinc mine. The long-term jobs created by Red Dog “largely lifted Northwest Alaska out of its previously economically depressed condition,” writes Bradner, adding that mining companies are “good taxpayers for local municipalities.”
