After years of debate, Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin signed a new bill into law, streamlining the permitting process for new mining projects in the state.
According to an infographic that Gov. Walker tweeted, Senate Bill 1 (SB 1) will streamline the process for “safe and environmentally sound” mining. An iron mine could create 2,800 long-term jobs in the state.
Walker told the Associated Press, “In light of our mining tradition, I’m thrilled to sign legislation into law protecting environmental safeguards, while providing certainty to the mine permitting process … I am hopeful today’s actions will result in the creation of thousands of private sector jobs in the coming years.”
Minerals mining and manufacturing are both substantial economic drivers in Wisconsin and this bill will allow the state to contribute to our national economy and domestic supply chain.
Next week, the Energy and Minerals Subcommittee will hold a legislative hearing on seven mining bills that will create jobs, streamline the federal permitting process and make America less dependent on foreign minerals. Hopefully we can carry the progress made in Wisconsin across the country.
