At a meeting on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey announced its plans to reorient the focus of its research on rare earth minerals. USGS Director Marcia McNutt told members of the House Appropriations Committee that the agency plans to shift its research focus from mapping the location of rare earths internationally to locating where they are domestically and identifying a process for rare earths to be extracted profitably.
