NMA CEO’s letter on “in-sourcing” manufacturing to The New York Times

In a recent letter to The New York Times, NMA President and CEO Hal Quinn responds to a front-page feature on American manufacturing titled “An American Model for Tech Jobs?” and addresses a key reason behind the outsourcing of American manufacturing jobs.

The article examines why many major auto and high-tech manufacturers, including Apple and Dell, rely heavily on Asian factories rather than those in America. Quinn argues that U.S. manufacturers are often unable to secure the raw materials they need—namely minerals—here in America, and are forced move their operations overseas to gain access to the elements vital to their businesses.

“If the White House is to ‘bring manufacturing home,’ it must first help establish domestic supply chains of minerals—raw materials vital to American industry,” wrote Quinn.
