Leading policymakers endorse Freeport-McMoRan’s Climax Mine reopening

Last week, Freeport-McMoRan’s Climax Mine in Colorado’s Lake and Summit counties reopened, drawing praise from Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., who noted the local job creation and economic opportunity the mine will generate.

In a display of bipartisanship, two additional national policymakers expressed their support for the mine. Sen. Michael F. Bennett, D-Colo., stated that, “The reopening of the Climax Mine showcases Colorado’s history and unique dependence on the land and highlights the growth and job potential in Colorado’s bright future.”

Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., noted that, “With 400 full time employees and 1,000 contractors, [the Climax Mine has] been vital to bolstering the regional economy of Leadville during otherwise difficult economic times.”

Providing remarks at the reopening ceremony was Bob Randall, deputy director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, who expressed his enthusiasm for the mine, saying, “Reopening Climax Mine is another sign of the strength for a Colorado economy regaining its steam.”
